About Biomedical Engineering Department (BME)

Biomedical Engineering Department (Arabic: قسم الهندسة الطبية الحيوية), after nearly 20 years since the first proposal was submitted by some colleagues (in 1999 AD) to establish a Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, that the dream has been realized by Resolution No. (42) of 2021 AD from His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research to establish this first department in Libyan universities.

Biomedical engineering is the scientific specialty that applies principles and concepts derived from engineering, science and technology to contribute to solving medical problems. It is also the science that specializes in studying the body of living organisms through the integration of engineering and medical sciences. Biomedical engineering is considered one of the most recent engineering sciences that emerged with the development of modern medicine. After the doctor alone performed all the tasks of diagnosis, treatment and even drug manufacturing, the medical device became an essential assistant to the doctor in diagnosing, treating and monitoring patients. This department is a great contribution to the field of science and learning. Biomedical engineering is a relatively new discipline. It has begun to spread to most universities around the world, both in developing and industrially advanced countries, applying engineering foundations, principles, and techniques to medical fields. It encompasses and specializes in several areas of expertise, including diagnosis, treatment, pharmacy, healthcare, community medicine, nursing, and more. These fields include tissue engineering, genetic engineering, medical imaging, organ transplantation, clinical engineering, rehabilitation, instrumentation engineering, nanotechnology applications, and more.

The department’s primary focus is on the quality of education and scientific research, with the goal of preparing and qualifying its graduates by developing their skills and learning abilities, equipping them with knowledge, and fostering a culture of innovation and creativity to contribute to improving healthcare for the nation’s citizens.
